Overview

A lesson is the curriculum content that makes up your courses, which students consume and interact with, including quizzes, text or HTML lessons, and video lessons. To complete a course, students must pass the lessons within it, either through grading tasks such as a quiz, or by completing the required content. Lesson completion can be either mandatory or optional. For example, some admins use optional, non-graded quiz questions within a lesson to act as a survey for feedback.

Anatomy of a Lesson

  • Content elements, such as video, quiz, and text or HTML.
  • Summary (optional): a summary of the lesson using text or HTML.
  • Downloadable content (optional), attachments of any file type that students can download as a supplement, such as a PDF.

Lesson Types

The lessons you can create from your dashboard include video lessons, text or HTML lessons, quizzes, and embedded content. To embed external content into a lesson, refer to the Embed Content in a Lesson article.

Combining Lesson Types

You do not have to choose just one lesson type. Video, HTML, audio, and a single quiz can be combined into the same lesson. To learn more, refer to the Combine Lesson Types article.

Note: Only one quiz can be used within a single lesson.

Mandatory and Optional Lessons

Lessons can be required or optional. Required lessons count toward course completion, while optional lessons do not. To learn more, refer to the Using Optional Lessons in a Course article.
